Scope of Practice Guidelines for Non-State Licensed Practitioners

This scope outlines what non-state-licensed wellness practitioners may and may not do, emphasizing education, support, and lifestyle guidance rather than diagnosis or treatment. It provides language practitioners can use to stay compliant and transparent and also ensures that AANWP/ANWPB practitioners operate within legal and ethical guidelines while providing safe and effective care to their clients.

General Guidelines

Non-state licensed wellness practitioners are trained professionals who utilize natural and holistic methods to support and enhance the health and well-being of their clients. Their practice is founded on principles of natural health; emphasizing prevention, wellness, and the use of natural therapies.

Professional Boundaries

  1. Non-Diagnosis of Illness: Non-state licensed wellness practitioners do not diagnose, treat, or cure medical conditions or diseases. They provide support and guidance to promote general wellness and address lifestyle factors that contribute to health.

  2. Client Education: Wellness practitioners focus on educating clients about healthy lifestyle choices, nutritional guidance, stress management, and natural health practices. They empower clients to take charge of their own health through informed decisions.

  3. Holistic Assessment: While wellness practitioners may conduct assessments to understand the overall health and wellness of their clients, these assessments are not used to diagnose medical conditions. Instead, they help identify areas for potential improvement in the client’s lifestyle and health practices.

Permissible Activities

  1. Wellness Coaching: Offering guidance on diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and other lifestyle factors to support overall health and well-being.

  2. Nutritional Advice: Providing individualized nutritional recommendations based on holistic principles, aiming to improve the client’s dietary habits and nutritional status.

  3. Herbal and Supplementary Recommendations: Advising on the use of herbs, vitamins, minerals, and other supplements to support health, always ensuring that recommendations do not conflict with any current medical treatments the client may be receiving.

  4. Holistic Therapies: Utilizing natural therapies such as aromatherapy, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, and other non-invasive methods to promote relaxation and well-being.

  5. Stress Management Techniques: Teaching and facilitating practices such as meditation, mindfulness, and breathing exercises to help clients manage stress and improve mental well-being.

Ethical Considerations

  1. Client Confidentiality: Maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all client information.

  2. Informed Consent: Ensuring that clients are fully informed about the nature of the services provided and the limits of the practitioner’s scope of practice.

  3. Referral to Medical Professionals: Encouraging clients to seek medical advice from licensed healthcare providers when necessary, and referring clients to medical professionals when symptoms suggest a potential medical condition.

  4. Professional Development: Committing to ongoing education and professional development to stay informed about the latest research and advancements in natural health and wellness.

Limitations

  1. Medical Procedures: Non-state licensed wellness practitioners do not perform any medical procedures or interventions, including surgery, prescribing pharmaceuticals, or administering injections.

  2. Emergency Care: Practitioners do not provide emergency medical care and should direct clients to appropriate emergency services when needed.

  3. Medical Claims: Avoiding any claims to diagnose, treat, or cure specific medical conditions or diseases.

This scope of practice ensures that non-state licensed wellness practitioners provide high-quality, ethical, and safe care within their professional boundaries. By adhering to these guidelines, practitioners can effectively support their clients’ health and well-being through natural and holistic means.
